First Time Changing Tube Hawk 250

This is my first time changing a tube on my Hawk 250. This really the first time I ever changed a tire =). I was very proud at the end of the day, it was a learning process but the next one will be much quicker.

I got my Shinko 244 tires in the mail today and I will be changing those sometime next week. Here is a picture of them next to my current tires.

MSR Black Steel Shift Lever Hawk 250

A few days ago I got the MSR black steel shift lever Hawk 250 in the mail while I was grilling some chicken wing. After the wings I went downstairs to my garage and installed the  MSR shift lever in a few minutes on the Hawk 250. It went on pretty easily without any issues. You need to remove the bolt before putting the shift lever on, or you will have trouble pushing it on the gear shaft.  If you would like to purchase this MSR shift lever for your hawk, click here or the image below (new window will open).

Remember to remove the bolt on the shift lever before putting it on, it will go on a lot smoother.

I didn’t compare it with the stock hawk 250 shift lever but it looks longer and 100% times better. I will take some pictures later and update this post. The model number for the MSR black steel shift lever Hawk 250 is  07-0709.

Thanks to Brian L for This Hawk 250 Skid Plate Suggestion With Install Pictures

Whats ups hawkers, I had a few people email me about the skid plate I have shown in the hawk 250 shop, I haven’t been able to purchase this item for my hawk yet, waiting for the budget to allow it. A very helpful user from our hawk facebook page was nice enough to take his skid plate setup off to show us some pictures of the setup and what you will need to do to make this work, this is a very simple modification.

Its not a direct bolt on, but as you can see its very easy to make it work and I’m sure there is 100 different ways to mount it and make it work, so if you don’t mind tinkering with your hawk then this should be very doable for you.

[fsbProduct asin=’B071L5MDF2′ size=’300′ align=’left’][fsbProduct asin=’B071VJ4NF2′ size=’300′ align=’center’]

I will also be doing a video and guide on the hawk 250 skid plate once I order it.  Below are all images from o Brian L from our Facebook Group, click here to join.

Specs on what you will need to mount the hawk 250 skid plate

Hardware. Two 1/4 by 2.5″ long bolts. One 1/4 by 1 3/4″ bolt. Some washers, lock washers or just use nyloc nuts on all 3 bolts.

Orange washers in pic come with the skid plate hardware.

Brackets are 1″ aluminum. 1/4″ thick so it wouldn’t bend when tightened down. Front bracket is 6.5″ long. Back is 4.25″ long. Aluminum bar stock should be available at virtually any hardware store as well as all bolts. Mine was scrap I had laying around so Used what I had.

Slightly bigger than 1/4″ holes drilled in front bar. Holes are 2 1/8″ apart from center to center of hole.

Bolts pass through the skid plate and bracket with the frame sandwiched in between.

Back bracket rests in small v section under frame and merely tightened up the bolt until skid plate didn’t move anymore.

Removal was a lot easier than I expected. Merely removed front bolts and bracket and slid plate forward until back bracket slid off the V section under the frame. Took longer to move bike away from my bench and get tools out than removing the plate.

Upgrade to to Hawk 250 Shop to Include eBay Links and Price Compare

Whats up hawk owners, I did some upgrading to the store, when you go to Hawk250.com/shop/ and click on any of the products. On the top you will see the Amazon price and if its in stock. On the bottom you will see the eBay prices and if its in stock. Just compare the amazon and ebay item to make sure its the same one and you are set, once in a while ebay puts in a item that might be different, so it just helps to double check. Here is a quick video I made showing how to find the eBay and Amazon Links

Hawk 250 Exhaust and Carb out of Stock on Amazon 1-24-17

Whats up fellow hawk 250 owners. I got a few emails about the hawk 250 aftermarket exhaust and mikuni carburetor being out of stock. I have checked amazon and right now it seems they are all out of stock. I’m sure they will get them back in a week or so. I really have no control, I know it sucks not being able to order it when you want it right away lol.  I found some eBay sellers that are selling the exhaust and carb. They are offering fast shipping and you should get it quick. Below are my ebay affiliate links and I appreciate you clicking them and helping me keep the website going and keeping the hawks gas tank full =).

Hawk 250 – Upgrading to 115 Carb Jet and Oil change

Decided to finally swap out the 110 jet with a 115 jet on my hawk 250. It takes only a free minutes to swap out the jets on these carburetors from Hawk 250 shop. You don’t need to drill out the screws to make adjustments or replace the jets.

Then I did oil change on the hawk 250 and was getting ready to do a quick ride but after checking the bike I noticed a bolt that snapped off. I might have tightened it too much and from all the vibration it just snapped. I need to find a stronger replacement for that bolt and nut.

Below us a picture of my hawk 250 bike with the bolt head missing.

This is my buddies hawk 250 and how the bolt should look :). I have emailed therps.net and hopefully they have replacements but maybe I’m better of finding a stronger USA made bolt and nut to relace this China one.

New Hawk 250 Hand Brush Guards

I finally got my new hawk 250 hand brush guards in the mail yesterday and I got the chance to install them today. It was not a quick close your eyes and bolt it install, It did require some thinking to make it fit lol. Each rider might have a different setup with the position of their levers. But even with that I think if you have the patience and willing to put in the work then you can add these in without doing any cutting to the levers or serious fabrication =).

I also had to go to the hardware store to get some longer bolts and get some metal spacers to give me more room between the levers and the new hawk 250 hand brush guards.  You will see the metal spacers in the images shown below. The bolt you will need is a M8 1.25, I forgot the length I got but I think it was like 2 1/2 inches. I would get a few different sizes and see what best fits. You should also get some 1in to 1 1/2in metal spacers. You will see in the images below where I used the metal spacers with the longer bolts.

New Hawk 250 Hand Brush Guards Pictures

hawk 250 hand brush guards

Here is the right side of the new hawk 250 hand brush guards. You can see I have plenty of room but everyones bike will be different depending on how you have your levers setup. I had to move mines in a bit but that is how I prefer it. So you can install these on your bikes, but it will require some trial and error until you get them perfect for your setup.

New Hawk 250 Hand Brush Guards

Here is the left side of the new hawk 250 hand brush guards. You can see I have plenty of room and you can see where I used the metal spacer and the longer M8 1.25 bolt instead of the short one that came with the new hawk 250 hand brush guards.

The bolts that come with this kit will be too short. I sent to Ace Hardware and got some long M8 x 1.25 bolts and I also got some 1inch long M8 spacers to get a nice tight connection. Adding the spacers gives you a lot more room to work with and you shouldn’t need to trim the levers.

For the throttle side you will need to do some cutting. I’m sure there is a different way of doing this but this is how I did it. I found that if you don’t cut out as shown below, then your throttle can get stuck and you don’t want that. When you push in the new hawk 250 hand brush guards in, it will go against the rubber grip. I did some quick trimming and throttle doesn’t get stuck.

hawk 250 hand brush guards

I would also recommend wrapping some black tape, in my case all I had was blue painting tape but it did the job =). I found if you don’t add some more layers then it doesn’t really make a snug connection when pushing it into the bars. Adding some tape, fixed this issue when installing the new hawk 250 hand brush guards.

Where to Buy New Hawk 250 Hand Brush Guards

You can find these new hawk 250 hand brush guards on eBay or Amazon. I have links for both, for Amazon links click here and for eBay links, click here. There are several colors to choose from on the websites. These hand brush guards do require a bit a patience to install and tweaking to fit on your hawk 250, but if you got the patience and willing to put in the time, then you can get these new hawk 250 hand brush guards installed on your hawk, they really look bad ass =).

Hawk 250 Mikuni Carburetor and Jets

If your hawk 250 isn’t running correctly, chances are the stock hawk 250 carburetor is not tuned correctly or using the wrong jets. I have worked on 4 different hawk 250 dual sport bikes so far and all of them had the same issue, not tuned or running the wrong jets. The hawk 250 manufactures have the adjustment screws and the screws to remove the carb cover sealed with plastic coating so you can’t take them out.  My first hawk 250 bike I was able to remove the tamper proof screws they have but it does require some tools to be able to get the cover open. If you would like to mess with the stock hawk 250 carb, I have the images posted at the bottom of this blog post.

Hawk 250

I purchased my hawk 250 mikuni carburetor and jets from amazon. If you would like to purchase this carb, you can click on the images below (links will open in new window) for the carb and jets. My affiliate link is setup with the links below and if you use my link to purchase the carb, I will get a small commission from amazon and it all goes back towards my hawk 250 and keeping this website going.  If you need any help with replacing the carb, please email me and I will do my best to guide you with any issues you are having. I’m not a motorcycle or a auto mechanic but I know my way around the toolbox and how to get stuff done.

The jet size that I’m currently using is a 115 but I recommend getting the package below that has different carb jet sizes so you can quickly switch them out for testing them in your location.

I would also highly recommend swapping out the stock hawk 250 exhaust with the new hawk 250 aftermarket exhaust. Its fairly priced for what you get and the minute you swap out the hawk 250 stock exhaust with the new aftermarket one, you will notice a difference. You can read my post on the hawk 250 exhaust by clicking here.

Here are some pictures if you are looking to modify your stock hawk 250 carburetor, in my opinion the hawk 250 Mikuni carb is easier to work on and its not that expensive to get for your hawk. If you have any questions about the stock hawk 250 carb or the Mikuni one, please contact me and I will get back to you asap.
